Rusty Bicycle Wheel at the Swiss Sheep Farm, Pattaya

Swiss Sheep Farm, Pattaya, Chonburi, Thailand

An old bicycle with a rusted wheel and a flat tyre resting on the cobblestones of the Swiss Sheep Farm near Pattaya, its European-style farmhouse blurred behind.

The Story Behind

We spent a January afternoon at the Swiss Sheep Farm near Pattaya, one of those Thai theme parks that recreates a little European village at the foot of Khao Chi Chan, the Buddha mountain. Most people come for the sheep and the photo props, and honestly, so did we. But walking the cobbled lane past the yellow farmhouse, this old bicycle stopped me before any of the staged scenes did.

The rust was real. Whatever this bicycle had been in its first life, years of coastal humidity had worked through the rim, the hub and every spoke, and the flat tyre had settled into the cobblestones like it had grown roots. The early-afternoon sun was harsh, so I got low, opened the XF23mm all the way to f/1.4 and let the shutter run to 1/3800s — the wheel carries the frame while the farmhouse and its blue shutters melt into colour behind it.

It ended up being my favourite frame from the whole park — not the sheep, not the props, but a dead bicycle doing nothing at all. The rest of that trip lives in my Thailand Collection.
