Tower Reflections on the Danga Bay Waterfront, Johor Bahru
Apartment towers on the Danga Bay waterfront mirrored in flat calm water, with a timber pontoon and white-capped mooring posts under a hazy late-afternoon sky.
The Story Behind
This is the Danga Bay waterfront in Johor Bahru, at a quarter to six on a September evening, about an hour before sunset. A haze had settled over the Straits of Johor and flattened the light, and the water was so still it barely moved. The apartment towers along the shore stood upside down in the bay, floor by floor, almost as sharp as the real thing.
I had the 16-50 at its long end, 50mm, to pull the towers and the floating pontoon into one frame, and kept a mooring post near the middle so its reflection would drop straight down the water beneath it, white cap and all. The pontoon gives the picture something to stand on; without it the towers and their reflections would just hang in the haze. f/7.1, 1/2400, ISO 1000, at 5:44 in the evening, finished later in darktable.
The next evening I was on Tioman, where a grey sky sent me looking for colour instead, and found it in the bougainvillea along the lane in Kampung Tekek. For another jetty over glassy water, have a look at the umbrella jetty on Phewa Lake in Pokhara.
